Periodontic Residency
Standing Faculty
Joseph P. Fiorellini, DMD, DMSc
Dr. Fiorellini is Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics. Prior to joining Penn Dental Medicine in October 2005 he was at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he served as Vice Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity; Head of the Division of Periodontology; and Program Director of Periodontology. Throughout his tenure at Harvard, Dr. Fiorellini also maintained a private practice in periodontics and implant dentistry. His areas of research include the relationship of genetics and periodontal disease and studies related to periodontal regeneration and implantology. Dr. Fiorellini currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Periodontology, the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants and the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He has authored more than 50 manuscripts, reviews, and textbook chapters, and his research awards have included National Institutes of Health and International Association of Dental Research travel grants, The American Academy of Periodontology Young Investigators Award, The Academy of Osseointegration Research Award, and The European Association for Osseointegration Research Prize. He was also the recipient of the 2005 E. Bud Tarrson Research Award in Oral Plastic Surgery from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. He earned his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1990, and in 1993, was awarded a DMSc degree in Oral Biology and a Certificate in Periodontology from Harvard as well.
Marjorie K. Jeffcoat, DMD
Dr. Jeffcoat is Professor of Periodontics. She also served as the Morton Amsterdam Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine from July 2003 through June 2008. A member of the National Institutes of Health-NIDCR Advisory Committee for Research on Women's Health, she has also served on the editorial boards of a variety of professional research journals for more than 20 years. Prior to joining the School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Jeffcoat served as Assistant Dean of Research and Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. While at Alabama, she was also a professor of biomedical engineering, held the James Rosen Endowed Chair of Dental Research and served as interim chair for the Department of Oral Biology. A graduate of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, she also taught periodontology there for 10 years. Dr. Jeffcoat is a member of the Institute of Medicine, the International College of Dentists, and a past president of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Association for Dental Research and the International Association for Dental Research.
Jonathan Korostoff, DMD, PhD
Dr. Korostoff is an Associate Professor of Periodontics-Clinician Educator at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. As a participant in numerous courses at both the pre- and post-doctoral levels, he lectures on a broad variety of topics. These include the structures of the periodontium, basic immunology, oral microbiology, periodontal pathogenesis and implant dentistry, amongst others. In collaboration with Dr. Joseph DiRienzo, Professor of Microbiology, Dr. Korostoff is a co-investigator on two NIH-funded projects with the goals of furthering our understanding of the role of a bacterial cytotoxin in periodontal pathogenesis and evaluating the utility of a genetically-modified version of the same cytotoxin as a potential therapeutic agent for treating certain types of cancer in humans. Additionally, Dr. Korostoff is principal investigator on three corporate funded clinical research projects studying materials used for guided bone regeneration and immediate loading of dental implants. He is also an attending periodontist in the Dental Care Network and the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.
Alan M. Polson, DDS, LDS, MS
Dr. Polson is Professor of Periodontics and D. Walter Cohen Chair, and Director of the Periodontal Clinical Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Before coming to the University of Pennsylvania in December 1994, Dr. Polson was Vice President and Director of Clinical Research at Atrix Laboratories, Inc. in Fort Collins, Colo. Prior to joining Atrix in 1990, Dr. Polson had been Chairman of the Department of Periodontology for 13 years at the Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester, N.Y. During his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Polson has been Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Associate Dean for Graduate Education and had a leadership role in FDA multicenter clinical trials. Degrees received by Dr. Polson include: DDS cum laude from the University of London; DMD from the University of Pennsylvania; LDS from the Royal College of Surgeons, England; MA from the University of Pennsylvania; MS from the University of Rochester (NY); and a Specialty Certificate in Periodontology from Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester. In 1977, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and he has been a practicing clinical periodontist for over 30 years. Since 1971, Dr. Polson has conducted extensive research funded by over $14,000,000 obtained from more than twenty major national and international research grants. His research has encompassed etiology, pathogenesis, occlusion, treatment, and regeneration of periodontal tissues. He is author or co-author of over 150 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, together with making over 180 invited presentations worldwide serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals.

Naciye Guzin Uzel, DDS, DMSc
Dr. Uzel is the Director of the predoctoral periodontics at Penn Dental Medicine. She is involved with clinical and didactic courses and seminars for pre- and postdoctoral periodontics. Dr. Uzel earned her DDS from Arkana University, Certificate in Microbiology from The Forsyth Institute, DMSc in Oral Biology, and a Certificate in Periodontology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Prior to joining Penn Dental Medicine, she was a staff associated at The Forsyth Institute. Her research is focused on the microbiology aspect of periodontal and other oral diseases. Dr. Uzel's laboratory studies species of the complex oral microbiota as well as effects of different treatments by using advanced molecular techniques.
